The Aga Khan Award for architecture, "recognises examples of architectural excellence that encompass contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, re-use, and area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues" (website here).
The Aga Khan Award of Architecture is indeed a driving force reflecting upon and influencing the making of architecture in the Islamic world. Having been witness and a technical reviewer myself of two projects in the last cycle, I can confidently say that it is the most rigorous process of evaluation of nominations. Thus, the award and its publications are still unique as to the focus on theory and practice of architecture in the Islamic world. Dr. Hassan Radoine. Bc.Arch., Msc., M.Phil., Ph.D. Head of Architectural Engineering Department, University of Sharjah, UAE.
